Biography

He was a lawyer and solicitor and lived in the house on the corner of Pelsterstraat and Kleine Pelsterstraat, was a member of the Christian Historical Union (CHU), became a councillor in the municipality of Groningen until the council was put out of action by the occupiers.
He married Johanne Kristine Pedersen on 27 May 1927 in Denmark and together they had 7 children.
Koo has been fiercely anti-NSB since 1933. He hid five Jewish people in hiding in his home on Pelsterstraat. The Germans found out and on 25 September 1944 an arrest team raided the house. Domela Nieuwenhuis Nyegaard escaped but was immediately shot dead on the street by SD'er Georg Wensel Nieswaag.
His father, Jan Derk, was present at the raid and cursed the Germans after the murder and was therefore arrested and transferred to the Scholtenhuis and banished to Schiermonnikoog. His mother was thrown out onto the street with her children.
