During a Soviet attack north of Newel in early 1944, Oberfeldwebel Müller took over command of his Kompanie after its previous commander had fallen in battle. With these men he managed to push back the attacking Soviet forces, however he himself would die in the battle. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition of his devotion to duty here.
