Awarded for his actions during the battle to contain the Soviet bridgehead on the peninsula south of Noworossijsk. Here, on the 14.09.1942, the III./Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 91 (including Obergefreiter Mayer) repelled a Soviet attack of 2000 men and 20 tanks. In this battle Mayer found himself encircled by the Soviets, and after his squad leader had fallen he took his place and broke through a Soviet blocking position. He then eliminated 3 hostile bunkers and forced a breakout, one in which many other German soldiers were also able to escape.
Mayer would receive the Knight’s Cross for his role in contributing to the German defensive achievement here.
