During the combat in East Prussia in February 1945, the 292. Infanterie-Division fought in the hard rearguard battles along both sides of the Tiefensee. Here an imminent enemy breakthrough near the village of Paulen was averted at the last minute by a counterattack of the Kampfgruppe Pionier-Bataillon 292 led by Leutnant Meng, a victory that was achieved only at great cost. However through this action Meng and his troops preventing a cleavage of the German pocket in which they were fighting, and as a result Meng would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
