The following press excerpt (dated 01.04.1945) describes why Sitt was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“… Wilhelm Sitt was ready for duty following every attack by the air gangsters. A notable example of this was when 22 high explosive and heavy firebombs struck an important trans-shipment railway station without exploding. Sitt defused these, and it was thus possible for interrupted railway flow to recommence very shortly afterwards. In the same way he went on to prevent a large supply shipment from being destroyed. He has also distinguished himself while serving as a Bataillon commander in the Volkssturm, wherein he has transferred his experiences to his men through his intensive energy.”

Sitt had defused a total of several hundred bombs by the time he was awarded the Knight’s Cross.
