Haase had been in charge of the Scholtenhuis since November 1942. In his rank of major he was by far the superior of the other staff and he was treated as such. "Herr Haase" was a trained man, economist and lawyer, who loved music and had an impeccable appearance.
His large office was located on the side of the Grote Markt. He had his own company car with driver, a great luxury in wartime.
Haase preferred to escape the chaos at the Scholtenhuis, he was often on leave in Germany and when there were serious actions, he signed the necessary orders and then looked the other way.
In his trial, he claimed that his staff walked all over him and that he never knew about the terrible interrogation methods, the beatings and the murders. However, many witnesses have stated that Haase regularly inspected the prisoners. He was sentenced to death and commuted to life in 1952. He was pardoned and released in 1959.
