On the 23.11.1942 the Soviets launched a surprise attack against the left wing of the 76. Infanterie-Division, which at the time was among the German units defending the emerging Stalingrad perimeter. The Soviets broke through the German lines near Nishnij Akaktov and headed southwest towards Wertjatschi, between the 76. Infanterie-Division and the IX. Armee-Korps. By this they cut off the retreat route of the latter, and thereby threatened to trap the 44., 376. & 384. Infanterie-Divisionen as well as elements of all three Panzer-Divisions located at Stalingrad in a smaller pocket outside the main 6. Armee encirclement.
However with the support of the Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 244, the 76. Infanterie-Division was able to halt the attackers before Wertjatschij, seal off the penetration, and eventually clean up the penetration in a counterthrust that lasted until the 27.11.1942. Major Dr. Gloger would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his role in this battle, which in turn helped prevent the fragmentation of the 6. Armee’s pocket.
