Lived in Wervershoof. Son of Adrianus Akkerman and Maria Geertruida Mol. Married to Lijdia Hendrika den Otter (three children). Head of public primary school. Dutch Reformed. Member of the resistance under the pseudonym Winkelman and belonging to the LO-Wervershoof. Previously he was chairman of the local branch of the Dutch Union.
In 1942 he began helping people go into hiding in West Friesland. He founded various branches of the National Organisation for Aid to People in Hiding (LO) in his area. Akkerman pretended to have a chronic illness in 1944, received paid sick leave for this and was thus able to devote himself fully to resistance activities. He was also a contributor to and distributor of the illegal magazine Je Maintiendrai. On 7 July 1944, the Akkerman family went into hiding in Amsterdam. He continued his resistance activities there as well. He was betrayed and arrested on 3 February 1945 in Wervershoof, where he had returned. His regular courier Elisabeth (Bep) Kooiman was also arrested at the same time. He was transferred via Alkmaar to the prison on Weteringschans in Amsterdam. He was executed by firing squad, together with Johannes Langedijk, Johannes Lodder and Petrus Antonius Stokhof of the LO-Wervershoof, among others, in retaliation for the attack on SS-Befehlshaber Hanns Albin Rauter on 6 March 1945 near Woeste Hoeve.
The names of the four resistance fighters are inscribed on the memorial stone on Raadhuisplein in Wervershoof.
