Biography

Captain

After sinking his ship in the roadstead of Surabaya, Wentzel was interned in the infamous Kesilir camp near Banjoewangi in 1942. In April 1943, a number of people from this camp were taken by the Kempeitai to the prison in Banjoewangi. This also included former trainee Wentzel. Nothing has been heard from him since.
In 1946 it emerged that the deportees, with others a total of 40 people, were executed by the Japanese on July 10, 1943. Their bodies were discovered in a mass grave in the woods near Bondowoso. Wentzel was reburied in 1949 in Jakarta, Dutch War Cemetery Antjol.
