Fourth mate ms Modjokerto
Hooijsma left for Australia on February 28, 1942 with the Modjokerto from Tjilatjap. On March 1, 1942, distress signals from the Modjokerto were received on the MS Siantar, indicating that the ship was being attacked by Japanese aircraft. Since then nothing has been heard from the Modjokerto. Further investigation has shown that the captain, second and third mate of those on board who were taken prisoner of war drowned in the infamous disaster of the Junyo Maru on September 18, 1944 near Benkoelen. However, the fourth mate Hooijsma, who was also a prisoner of war, was beheaded on March 24, 1942 in Kendari on Celebes and buried there in a mass grave. In May 1968, a reburial took place at the Dutch war cemetery Antjol in Jakarta.
