Awarded for the successes of his Abteilung during the fighting of the 4. Panzer-Division in August-September 1944. It particularly distinguished itself on the 19.08.1944, when the Regiment destroyed 27 tanks, 2 assault guns and 7 anti-tank guns of the enemy without friendly armour losses. Two days later the Abteilung engaged a strong tank force north of Levalaisi and destroyed 7 of 15 Soviet IS-2 tanks. Later, on the 27.08.1944, the Abteilung captured the villages of Pukes and Pluki as part of Kampfgruppe Hoffmann.
In total the entire Panzer-Regiment destroyed a total of 237 Soviet AFVs and 204 anti-tank guns/artillery pieces in August. In September it would go on to destroy another 28 AFVs and 131 anti-tank guns/artillery pieces. Grohe and his Abteilung had a major share in these successes.
