He helped oppressed and persecuted Jewish compatriots, was a contact person between various resistance groups, helped agents of the Special Assignments Bureau who had been dropped in London and was involved in the student resistance. In 1943 he refused to sign the declaration of loyalty. He was arrested on 1 March 1945 when he attempted to enter the house at Weteringschans 137 in Amsterdam, where his fellow fraternity members Johan Bais and Theodoor van Gogh were staying. Gorter was met by SD officers on patrol. He was executed by firing squad on the Amsteldijk near Rozenoord as reprisal for the attack on SS Befehlshaber Hanns Albin Rauter on 6 March 1945 near Woeste Hoeve.
His name is on a memorial stone for the pupils and former pupils of the Nieuwe Lyceum at the old ‘Gedenkt te Sterven’ (Remember to Die) cemetery on Oude Torenstraat in Hilversum and on a plaque in the Singelkerk in Amsterdam.
