He was a member of the Student Resistance and refused to sign the declaration of loyalty in 1943. He also helped people in hiding find a shelter, arranged for extra identity cards, and was involved in arms airdrops and the transport of weapons. He later joined the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (Internal Armed Forces) and was a member of the staff of the Strijdend Gedeelte (Fighting Section) in Amsterdam. He was arrested by members of the Sipo at his hiding place at 137 Weteringschans in Amsterdam when they were stationed at the entrance door. Beunders was transferred to the prison on Weteringschans in Amsterdam. He was executed by firing squad in reprisal for the attack on SS Befehlshaber Hanns Albin Johann Baptist Rauter on 6 March 1945 near Woeste Hoeve.
