    Biography

    Herman Willem Hartwig was born on June 28th, 1904 as son to Adam Engelbertus Hartwig and Wilhelmina Louisa van Bergen. Het was married at Meester Cornelis, Java on April 8th, 1929 to Lambertha Adriana Hoogeveen. Lived in Balikpapan. Kapitein der Infanterie (Captain of Infantry) with the KNIL (Royal Dutch East Indien Army). Professional Officer.
    After the Japanese invasion in the night of January 23rd-24th, 1942 in Balikpapan a group of civilians and military were executed in an act of revenge for the destructions done to an oil installation of the BPM. Al victims among who was Hartwig, werde forced to go into the sea at Klandassan Ketjil and then were killed by machinegun fire. As far as known a group of 78 persons were killed. Hartwig first was buried at the forma Field of Honor of East-Borneo at Balikpapan.
