    Biography

Lived in Santpoort (municipality of Velsen), Wijnoldy Daniëlslaan 33. Son of Adriaan Cornelis Smitt and Jeannette Marie Baak. Married to Nellij Avis. Chemical engineer at the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij. Dutch Reformed. Member of the resistance (pseudonym Hendrikse).
Among other things, he helped persecuted Jewish compatriots. He was also a member of the so-called V-Army, a group that operated in the municipality of Velsen. Smitt was placed on redundancy pay in July 1940, and then set up his own laboratory for the preparation of sweeteners, medicines and chemicals. He clashed with the Price Control Board on several occasions due to violations of the law. He was even arrested once. Smitt also received a hefty fine. It was precisely for these reasons that the ‘official resistance’ was not eager to accept him into their ranks. The V-Group later merged with the Domestic Armed Forces. Smitt collected military data in the port of IJmuiden. He was arrested in his home on 23 February 1945, together with C. Peereboom. He was transferred from the police headquarters to the detention centre on Weteringschans in Amsterdam. Smitt was shot at Rozenoord on Amsteldijk near Woeste Hoeve in reprisal for the attack on SS-Befehlshaber Hanns Albin Johann Baptist Rauter on 6 March 1945.
