    Biography

    Jakob Hendrikus van der Veen lived in Amsterdam at the Witte de Withstraat 117. He was born in Wouterswoude, Friesland, the Netherlands on April 21st, 1890 as the son to Reformed Preacher Reinder Jan van der Veen (April 7th, 1863, Spijk, community Bierum - March 17th, 1942, Bussum) and Elisabeth Henderika Venhuizen (April 17th, 1864, Baflo - March 18th, 1929, Goes). Married at Amsterdam on April 17th, 1918 to teacher Margaretha de Best (18 september 1887 Amsterdam - 10 december 1945 Amsterdam). The couple had four children: Wilhelmina Dorothea (May 21st, 1919, Amsterdam), Reinder Jan (February 28th, 1921, Amsterdam), Jakob Henderikus (April 20th, 1923, Amsterdam) and Elisabeth Margaretha (July 18th, 1924, Amsterdam).

    Van der Veen came from a line of familymembers who were preachers, like his father and his grandfather Jakob Hendrikus van der Veen. He himself was an architect and member of the BNA (Bond van Nederlandse Architecten). As an architect he designed the NCRV-studio in Hilversum, the Netherlands built in 1940. Further more he designed five churches and many schools. As a member of the resistance during the Second World War he belonged to the KP-Amsterdam, where he provided hidings for people who needed to hide for the Germans.

    During the night of September 1st/2nd, 1944, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) searched his house in order to find his son Rein Jan who was a member of the resistance. Rein Jan and his brother managed to escape. During the escape a German was killed by one of the sons. Beceause he had held his son in hiding, Jakob Hendrikus was taken hostige bij the SD. He was to be released when his son reported himself to the SD what did not happen.

    He was executed and cremated on September 6th, 1944 at Konzentrationslager Herzogenbusch in Vught, Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands.
