    Biography

Hugo van Lennep had been mobilised during the German invasion in May 1940 and was a sergeant in the Searchlight Defence Against Aerial Targets unit. This unit was tasked with protecting Ypenburg airfield near The Hague. After the capitulation, he returned to Delft to continue his studies to become an architectural engineer at the Technical University (now TU Delft).
In the spring of 1943, he refused to sign the declaration of loyalty that the occupying forces required of students in order to continue their studies. A short time later, he also ignored calls to report for work assignments and to report as an aged soldier to be returned to prisoner of war camp, and went into hiding in The Hague.
At his hiding place, Van Lennep man
ufactured radio transmitters for various illegal groups. He was also involved in the publication of the booklet De Moffenspiegel (The Moffen Mirror) by the illegal publishing house De Bezige Bij. Artistically inclined as he was, he made drawings and anti-German cartoons for this publication.
In December 1944, he twice tried in vain to cross the major rivers to the already liberated southern Netherlands.
On a third attempt on 6 or 9 January 1945, Van Lennep was arrested near Dubbeldam and taken to the Oranjehotel prison in Scheveningen. On 17 February 1945, he was executed by firing squad on the Waalsdorpervlakte along with the two men with whom he had attempted to escape to the south and one other person who remains unidentified. The bodies were buried in a grave pit.
On 25 April 1947, Van Lennep was reburied in the cemetery of honour.
