    Biography

    Lived in the Dutch East Indies. Son of Pieter Nieuwdorp (head of a school) and Arendje Adriana Neecken. Landstorm sergeant KNIL. He was a prisoner of war aboard the Japanese steamship Suez Maru, which was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Bonefish just east of the Kangean Archipelago. The Japanese army leadership did not allow Allied prisoners to survive or fall into enemy hands. The drowning people floating in the sea were shot dead from the deck of the minesweeper W 12. Nieuwdorp got a seaman's grave.

    On Thursday, September 1, 2016, the posthumously awarded Mobilization War Cross was presented to the late Lst.Sgt.1st class Inf. KNIL, Willem Hendrik Nieuwdorp by Mr Jacq Brijl on behalf of Minister of Defense Jeanne Hennis-Plasschaert, to granddaughter Irene Scheffens-Willinge.
