    Biography

Lived in Amsterdam, Groenendaalstraat 14-2h. Son of Johannes Floris Bruinsma (12 August 1892 The Hague - 8 December 1939 Middelburg) and Katharina Jacoba Kuijper (9 January 1897 Koudekerke; she lived to be 69). Married Adriana Catharina Quakkelaar (4 December 1918 Kruiningen) on 1 May 1941. Office clerk/agent of police/researcher State Police. Member of the resistance. He was district commander of the Internal Armed Forces. Bruinsma was shot dead by land guard Johann Denninger (1*) on the evening of 19 April 1945. A group of land guards had raided a building on Niersstraat in Amsterdam after an anonymous tip-off. There they found a radio, an Orange Band of the BS and illegal magazines. One of those present reported that Bruinsma was the leader of the squad and mentioned his address. The man who told them this was taken to Groenendaalstraat. On the way, he informed that Bruinsma was very dangerous. He rang the bell himself, but jumped away when the detective appeared at the stairs. ‘I thought,’ Denninger said at the trial before the Special Court of Appeal in Amsterdam in 1948, ‘that he had seen that Bruinsma was armed and that's why he took cover. A moment later I heard a shot and I saw a flash of light through the window in the door. Then, through the door, I emptied my submachine gun.' Bruinsma's wife argued that he could not have fired first because he was not armed. She had fetched her child after the attack and fled across the rooftops. The lawyer-fiscal claimed a 14-year prison term against Denninger. He was put to work at the Juliana mine in Eygelshoven.
(1*) Johann Kasper Denninger (8 December 1916 Amsterdam).
