"On 25 July 1944 Major NAIRNE was commanding "A" Company in the advance from SAN DONATO to PODERE IL MONTE (Map Ref: ITALY 1/25,000 Sheet 113 IV NE 666523. The enemy occupied an extremely strong position and to reach it it was necessary to move down a forward slope in full view of the enemy and across open country for about 2,500 yards. During this advance the enemy brought down incessantly heavy fire.
Major NAIRNE with the complete disregard for personal danger led his men forward with great determination and dash. His magnificent example so inspired his men that they advanced without hesitation, drove the enemy from the position and captured and held their objective.
Major NAIRNE by his outstanding courage and leadership ensured the capture of a strong enemy position without delay; he succeeded in keeping up the momentum of the Brigade advance, thereby saving many casualties which would have been suffered had the enemy been given time to bring up reserves.
Major NAIRNE has shown the same qualities of leadership, gallantry and coolness under fire on many previous occasions."
