"Sergeant McFarlane was wounded in the back and captured by the enemy while attempting to reach the coast after the capitulation of
France.

Follwoing an operation, he was later removed to a convalescent home from which he escaped, only to be recaptured after a period of liberty in which he endeavoured to reach freedom.

Several months later he once again succeeded in escaping and, after many adventures, crossed into Spain from whence he was repatriated on 5th June, 1941."
