"Troughout the operation following the landing at Taranto this officer displayed leadership and initiative of a hight order. His sqn, which was seeing action for the first time, was the leading unit of the Division to disentbark with the task of locating an enemy whose strength and disposition were unknown. Thereafter for three weeks his sqn was engaged continuously in reconnaissance tasks which frequently necessitated patroling deep into enemy occupied territory. The successes of these operations and the spirit in which they were carried out were due in a large measures to the example set by Major Gough quite regardless of his own safety."
