Lancaster W4888 took off from Holme on Spalding Moor in Yorkshire on 4th May 1943 on a mission to Dortmund, and Sgt Hadfield was its rear gunner. The aircraft was shot down by German fighterplane at 0140 hrs on 5th May 1943 and crashed one mile south of Workum. Six other crew members are buried alongside him, one other survived and was taken as POW.
