Citation:
"Major Sullivan fell into an ambush near St. MICHIELSGESTEL, (HOLLAND), on 24 Oct.44, and after having several fingers blown off, was taken prisoner. He was taken to a small country house, where he was put into a cellar with 15 Germans. In spite of his wounds, as soon as the enemy were asleep, Major SULLIVAN climbed up the ladder, and opened the trap door above, but it was discovered before he could make good his escape. Again the next day when he was taken to a forward Company H.Q. he made a break while shelling was in progress, only to be caught almost immediately.
Taken to a dressing station at GORINCHEM, Major Sullivan escaped early the following morning. Having crossed a canal, he scrambled the town ramperts within 50 yards of two sentries, and rolled over the other side to hide in a swamp. After nightfall he approached a house, and there found help. On 7 Nov.44 he was escorted across the MAAS to MADE where he met a Polish Unit.
In view of his wounds this officer's escape was a gallant performance."
