He has distinguished himself in the face of the enemy as gunner of a light machinegun, posted to casemate S81 on the river Meuse near Roermond. When in the morning of May 10th, 1940, during a heavy artillery barrage on the Dutch positions, the machinegunner of casemate S81 had left the casemate in panic, he voluntarily offered to leave the cover where he lay to replace the gunner, knowing that all fire was concentrated on these casemates. He has continued to operate the gun until it was struck and rendered inoperable.
