Biography

Dungar Singh served with the Jodhpur Sardar Infantry. He joined the army as an officer (Lieutenant).

Excerpts from Maj. Gen. Duncan's "History of the Jodhpur State Forces in the War, 1939-45:

"During the afternoon, a patrol from ‘C’ Company at Vezollo penetrated to IL Poggio, a small hamlet to the north, without being opposed, but reported the area to be heavily mined. In the evening, Major Dungar Singh, MC, was wounded by a mortar splinter whilst examining the forward area from an OP.

On May 20th, Major Dungar Singh, MC, with ‘C’ Company and part of HQ Company embarked with a large party of German prisoners of war and on May 21st, the remainder of the Battalion embarked with a further contingent of Germans.

After the war, His Highness Air Vice Marshall Shri Sir Umaid Singhji Sahib Bahadur, GSCI, GCIE, KCVO, ADC, LLD awarded the village of Utamber about 55 kms north-west of Jodhpur to Dungar Singh as Jagir. He commanded Jodhpur State Forces Training Centre, 18 May 1947–28 May 1949. Commanded Jodhpur Sardar Infantry (later 20th Bn (Jodhpur) The Rajput Regiment), 29 May 1949–31 Mar. 1950. Dungar Singh retired before his Battalion was absorbed into the Indian army on 1 Apr. 1951."

Citation:
"With 60 men of his company, he was sent to carry ammunition and supplies from Battalion Headquarters to the forward companies of a British unit which was closely engaged. The country was precipitous, and was mostly under enemy observation and mortar and MG fire. This officer himself reconnoitred routes for his parties, and throughout displayed great personal courage and fine leadership, earning praise from Corps, Division and Brigade Commanders for his own and his company’s work in exceptionally difficult circumstances."
