- Rank:
- Sergeant
- Unit:
- No. 460 (RAAF) Squadron, Royal Air Force
- Awarded on:
- November 6th, 1945
Recommendation:
"Sgt Entwistle has at all times displayed courage, keenness and ability of the highest order. His expert knowledge of Lancaster aircraft has made him a continuous source of confidence to his captain and crew.
On the day of March 23, 1945, Sgt Entwistle and his crew were detailed to bomb Bremen. Just as the aircraft had dropped its bombs on the target, intense heavy flak holed the aircraft in many places. The fuel lead lines to both starboard engines were severed and much fuel was lost. By his superb procedure and quickness of action, Sgt Entwistle manipulated his remaining fuel stocks to such effect that his pilot was able to make an emergency landing at Woodbridge.
So accurate were Sgt Entwistle’s calculations that he continually assured his captain that a landfall could be effected safely and, on landing, it was found that only 18 gallons of fuel remained in the tanks.
In recognition of this NCO’s fine efforts, his determination and devotion to duty, I recommend the award of the DFM.”
Station Commander remarks:
“Sgt Entwistle has been an outstanding example of a resourceful and efficient flight engineer.
His outstanding initiative has always been of immeasurable assistance to his captain, whilst his courage and devotion to duty under the most trying conditions has proved an inspiration to all.”
