Awarded for his actions during Operation Barbarossa. As commander of an attack group south of Smolensk Oberst Kleemann was able to overcome numerous river obstacles (namely the Ssosh, the Iput and the Desna) while preempting all Soviet attempts to create a stable defense line in the process.
