Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lieutenant
Unit:
The Lovat Scouts, 10th Indian Infantry Division, British Indian Army
Awarded on:
April 26th, 1945
Recommendation:
"On the night of 21/22 November 1944 Lieut. Cumming was in command of a fighting patrol whose object was to silence an enemy machine gun post which, as part of a strong position, had held up our advance during two previous days. The post was at Map Ref M. 264113.
After leaving groups on each flank to cover his move Lieut. Cumming led forward a small assault party which included an Italian partisan. Disregarding the danger of mines, which were known to be thickly sown in that area, and by the exercise of great skill Lieut. Cumming crept to within a few feet of an enemy sentry and was about to pull him down when the partisan showed himself and the sentry fired. Lieut. Cumming immediately leaped on the sentry, whom he killed, and then, since the alarm was given, continued on into the position firing his machine carbine and throwing hand granades. This courageous and prompt action resulted in the destruction of the enemy post complete.
