Biography
Denis Savage flew with 88 Squadron, then 18 Squadron, flying against the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and in the Dieppe Raid; he flew in all 71 operatonal sorties, before serving as a pilot for the Malaya and the Kenya Police, being killed in January 1954 in a flying accident.
He was burried in the Nyeri Civil Cemetery

Recommendation:
"This officer joined the Squadron in November, 1941. He took part in the search for the 'Scharnhorst' and 'Gneisenau' in February 1942 and also engaged in smoke laying operations during the assault on Dieppe on August 19th, 1942. On two occasions Pilot Officer Savage engaged in low-level attacks on power stations in occupied France. The first of these, at Comines, in August 1942 was pressed home to such good effect that the installation was out of action for 13 weeks. This officer has also taken part in intruder operations, and when he attacked the airfield at Haamstede, in Holland, from 150 feet, numerous fires were observed."
Recommendation:
"Since the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross this officer has continued to display ability and enthusiasm and a capacity for hard work. He has been one of his Squadron's most successfull pilots on night intruder operations, on many occasions flying in bad weather over difficult country. He has frequently fulfilled difficult tasks during the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, and much of his unit's good work has been due to his efforts."
