The Deutsche Nachrichtenbüro of the 24.02.1945 contained the following report which describes why Unteroffizier Schaarschmidt received the Knight’s Cross…

“At the suggestion of the Supreme Commander of the Luftwaffe, Reichsmarschall Göring, the Führer has awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Unteroffizier Schaarschmidt, a soldier in a Flak-Sturmregiment. Unteroffizer Herbert Schaarschmidt (born on 10.01.1920 in Zwickau) destroyed 8 enemy aircraft over a 20 day period during the battles in Hungary.”
