Frederick Hollins was the eleventh child of in total twelve brothers and sisters: six sisters and six brothers. All his five brothers died in between 1914 and 1928.
Frederick went to Trinity College, Cambridge, joined the RAF Reserve and served two years at the Air Training School at Hamble after which he served mostly in Africa. He returned to Hamble as an instructor in 1938.
After several changes of work, he went to 228 Squadron, flying Sunderland maritime patrol aircraft from Oban. He was killed in an accident near the Outer Hebrides on May 4th 1942 when Sunderland T9084 stalled and crashed on landing at Bowmore. Hollins was not piloting the aircraft at the time.
