He has distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy in the morning of May 10th, 1940 as commander of a patrol of approximately 20 men in fighting the enemy in Rotterdam.
In particular, after initially having fought the enemy near the Beursstation he moved his patrol to the Weimar Hotel and temporarily silenced the machingunfire which was directed at him from the White House across the Oude Haven.
Furthermore, after having heard of an enemy armour piercing gun left behind in the bend of the Bolwerk near the Vier Leeuwenbrug (Koningsbrug) he made his way acrosss some 200 yards under friendly supporting fire to collect the gun, drawing hostile fire on his return.
