Ofw Vierus was implicated in a plot to assassinate Stalin. He flew Pjotr Tawrin-Schilo, and his wife, Lidia, from Riga to a former German airfield at Kuklow, 150km west of Moscow. Upon landing, in a field near Karmanovo on 5 September, 1944, the pair made it to within 15km of Moscow via motorbike (and presumed discovered) when they were stopped at a roadblock. Vierus, unaware of their operation, tried to return to German lines, when he and the crew were captured at Welikije-Luki on 9 September, 1944.
