The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Peitsmeyer received the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberleutnant Peitsmeyer distinguished himself as a Staffelkapitän in a Schlachtgruppe on account of his outstanding bravery and superior leadership. His exceptionally bold devotion to duty led his Staffel to accomplish battle-deciding feats. Our ground troops found it much easier to push back the enemy due to the intervention of the ground-attack flyers. This result is particularly creditable to the bravery of this Staffelkapitän, as he was always the first one to brave the coordinated defensive fire of the enemy.”
By this time he had flown more than 100 ground attack sorties.
