Biography

George Racine Herbert was on June 11th, 1943 with Handley Page Halifax JB785 (fellow crew members Sergeant R. H. Makin, Sergeant Ernest Cassingham, Flight Sergeant Francis Greenwood, Sergeant Ronald Boone, Pilot Officer Archibald Wallace and Sergeant Frank Stewart) on a mission to Münster. On the return flight at 02.40 hrs the aircraft was shot down by Leutnant Werner Baake. The aircraft crashed at Giessenburg in the Netherlands. Pilot Officer Wallace and Sergeant Makin managed to escape by parachute and were teken POW. The other crew members were killed and buried at Crooswijk.
