The following newspaper article describes why Müller was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Heroic Death of a Divisional Commander:
… General Müller delivered outstanding service during the successful defense against enemy breakthrough attempts north of Orel at the end of February and start of March 1943. When the far numerically superior Soviets entered into our positions, he personally rushed to the foremost lines with hastily assembled forces. From there he led a deliberate counterattack under the heaviest of enemy fire that managed to bring the Bolsheviks to a halt. The Führer thus awarded him the Knight’s Cross on the 17.03.1943.”
