"Sergeant Bennett was the wireless operator of an aircraft detailed to attack Berlin one night in August, 1943. During the bombing run the aircraft was attacked by a fighter.
Sergeant Bennett was badly wounded in the chest but, in spite of this, gallantly attempted to quell a fire which had broken out in the structure. With his bare hands he kept the flames under control until an extinguisher was obtained with which the fire was put out. Not until the aircraft was clear of the target area did Sergeant Bennett disclose that he had been hit. His prompt and courageous action contributed materially to the safe return of the aircraft."
