On 26 April 1945 as platoon commander S/Sgt Drygala was leading the first assault party across the river Leda (MR 9111) under heavy machine-gun fire. His leadership and bravery helped to make the crossing successful and to establish the first small bridgehead on the other side of the river. During the operation, he was wounded but refused to let his men evacuate him until he was satisfied that the position was securely held.
