On the 16-17.08.1944 the 329. Infanterie-Division took up new defensive positions east and south of Berzaune. Shortly afterwards, on the morning of the 18.08.1944, the Soviets launched a tank-supported attack on the Grenadier-Regiment 551 right in the middle of its planned withdrawal. However 12 T-34s were destroyed, and a new German line was thrown up around the regimental command post. In the course of the day it would eventually be lost, and then retaken in a counterattack.
During the fighting on this day Hauptmann Klein would especially distinguish himself, but would end up going missing in the process. For his actions here he would receive the Oakleaves.
