Biography

At 17 Bill Upperton joined the Royal Air Force knowing that he wanted to be a fighter pilot. A year later he succeeded in being chosen, and went to train in the USA and Canada for 9 months, then came back to fly Hurricanes and Typhoons from 17/3/43 with 257 Burma Squadron, before, during and after the Invasion, starting at RAF Warmwell, Dorset.
On discharge he rejoined Pathe News, where he had worked before the war, but it didn’t suit him, and he returned to flying, from Fair Oaks, Lympne, (Austers) ,Stansted (Yorks), Croydon (Doves) and Gatwick (VC10 and 707s)
