"A fighter Plane crashed into a log when taking off from an aerodrome to intercept enemy fighters overhead, the plane plunged into a river near the airstrip, and its petrol and ammunition were ignited. Pte First Class Julius P. Franklin jumped into the river, swam through the flames and explosions, and pulled the pilot from his plane. Pte First-class Harvey Crandle and Pte James Scott waded into the river and helped him drag the pilot ashore at the risk of their lives."
