"For meritorious service and devotion to duty. This officer served as Brigade Intelligence Officer during the Winter Campaign and the Somme (1917) and since his return to this unit took part in the Battle of Polygon Wood, east of Ypres, September and October 1917. He was also with his Company at Brodseinde, October 1917, and also before Wytschaete.
He assisted in laying the tapes for the assembly of the Brigade on the eve of Polygon and was Officer in charge of the wiring of our line at Brocdseinde.
His fearlessness, gallantry and devotion to duty at all times is marked and his example as a good effect on all who come in contact with him."

At Peronne during operations on 1st/2nd September 1918, for conspicuous gallantry, brilliant leadership and initiative. On overcoming the first line of resistance his company commander allotted the right of the attack to his charge.
At the Peronne ramparts the company on his right was badly held up and suffering heavily, the company commander Lieutenant McArthur beng killed. As the action of his own platoon was not being affected, he took charge of the situation on the right reconnoltred and found a weal*** organized and personally lead a successful assault. Crossing the river, he dealt with considerable opposition through the town, establishing a line to the East and ensuring touch with the units on the flanks being severely wounded in the consolidation.
The gallantry displayed by this officer restored the much shaken right sector and his initiative turned a serious chock into an assured succes, contributing largely to the success of the major operation of which his sector was the pivot.

Recommended for a DSO but downgraded to a Bar to the MC.
