Vilho Rättö was the first Private to be awarded this high decoration. He received the award for his heroic action while serving as an anti-tank gunner in the 27. Infantry-Regiment. Rättö captured an enemy anti-tank gun and while under fire, he turned it against the enemy and destroyed four Russian tanks with it.
