The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Torpedoman's Mate Elvin C. Applegate, United States Navy, for heroism in the line of his profession from 17 April 1942 to 13 May 1943. During the first five war patrols of the U.S.S. DRUM (SS-228), Chief Applegate performed his duties in an outstanding manner which was largely responsible for the high percentage of torpedo hits on enemy vessels, and rendered great assistance to his Commanding Officer in sinking 59,417 tons of enemy shipping including a seaplane tender, and in damaging 26,300 tons including an aircraft carrier. His actions and conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
