Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos, veteran of the Italian-Greek War (1940-1941), joined the anti communist Greek security battalions to crush the communist partisans in occupied Greece. He also fought the Communists in the Greek civil war. He later became a dictator when he took control of the county by force.
