"At the time of the British evacuation from Narvik, Ludwisen was Second-Lieutenant and liaison officer attached to the British and Norwegian forces. When the British were evacuating from Narvik and after the mian body had crossed a fast-flowing river, Ludwigsen found out that a small party of British forces were cut off, gruadually being driven off into the river by advancing Germans. Almost all British soldiers could not swim. One British soldier and Ludwigsen decided to ferry the men across 30 yards of freezing water in the fast-flowing river. They dived in, grabbed hold of the men and under a hail of German fire went back and forh several times. Some of the soldiers were killed by the Germans and others were drowned because they tried to get across themselves. The Ludwigsen guided the small party 11 mils to the main British forces."
