During a Soviet night attack against the 9./Grenadier-Regiment 667 (positioned in the Kuban bridgehead), the Germans were able to throw back a much superior Soviet force under the leadership of Oberleutnant Johne. Later, at a time when his Kompanie was almost encircled by the enemy, Johne led his men through the hostile lines with such skill that their presence went unnoticed. As a result of this, as well as the nighttime conditions and rough terrain, the Soviet forces ended up attacking each other and took great losses in the process.
