Citation:
"Sergeant HUGO VAN DER HAGEN, immediately on the landing of the force, was detailed to establish local contacts. His task was a dangerous one, particulary during and after the withdrawal to the mountains when he hid tp arrange for accomodation for men who were sick and for the provision of supplies and, frequently, of transport. He showed courage and ingenuity when confronted by an enemy patrol, and only escaped by hiding for an hour in a waterfall of snowy water. He was selected to remain in the field after the withdrawal of the force as he had proved his coolness and organising ablility. His local knowledge and the confidence he established with the local people were decisive factors in the survival of the force, during an extremely critical period.
I recommend that Sergenat HUGO VANDER HAGEN should be awardd the Military Medal."
