On 18 October 1943, the rifle regiment, in which Sergeant Kokorev fought, crossed the Molochnaya river, but wasn't able to advance further and was stuck defending the captured bridgehead. When the enemy was counterattacking, Kokorev pushed his gun at front and, with a well-aimed shot, first destroyed an assault gun and then 4 heavy machine gun positions. The next day, the offensive against the city of Melitopol was launched. Kokorev was hit by shrapnel during one of the battles on 20 October. Overcoming the pain, the sergeant continued to fire and destroyed two tanks and up to forty enemy submachine gunners. Only when the counterattack was repelled, the now bleeding Kokorev was carried on a stretcher to the rear."
